Lent at First Pres

The liturgical season of Lent is a period of preparation for Easter lasting forty days (excluding Sundays) that begins on Ash Wednesday. During Lent, First Pres offers a variety of worship, study, and reflective opportunities for the Lenten journey.

If you have questions about Lenten Worship services and other studies and gatherings, please contact the Rev. Dr. Michael Waschevski (817.335.1231). May we have a holy Lent as we journey toward Holy Week and Easter.

ASH WEDNESDAY: FEBRUARY 18

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent with a focus on repentance. Marked with the sign of ashes, we begin with a posture of humility as we focus on God’s love and forgiveness. First Presbyterian offers three opportunities to worship: 12 noon in the Chapel, 5.30 p.m. at Worship on Wednesdays at Community Crossroads (1516 Hemphill St.), and 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary or livestream.

MIDDAY WORSHIP & CONCERTS: WEDNESDAYS, FEBRUARY 25-MARCH 25 AT 12 P.M.

These 30-minute services in the Sanctuary each Wednesday at 12 noon offer reflection on the season with prayer, music, and message. Immediately following each service, stay and enjoy a 30-minute organ concert by a guest organist. A complimentary light lunch will be served after each concert.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES ROOM

The Spiritual Disciplines Room (Room 230) will be a quiet, welcoming space where all ages are invited to practice ways of drawing closer to God during the season of Lent. Each week during Lent, the room will highlight different spiritual disciplines reflected in worship, such as, prayer, community, silence and service. The room will be open and available whenever the church is open, including weekdays. Come as you are, linger as long as you like, and discover how these disciplines might shape our Lenten journey together.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE: DISCERNMENT AND ACTION

Gather to practice discernment of how our faith, personally and communally, leads us into action for justice, mercy, and healing as we discuss the book For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional, by Hanna Reichel. We'll gather in the Youth Center on Wednesdays at 1:30 throughout Lent, beginning February 25, ending March 25.

LENTEN LECTIO COVENANT GROUP

Lectio Divina is a devotional prayer practice from the monastic tradition that invites participants to listen for God’s voice through slow, meditative reading of Scripture. Rather than focusing on analysis, it involves four movements - Reading, Reflection, Prayer, and Rest - allowing Scripture to speak personally to the heart. From February 22 through March 29, Linda Northern, Karen Hosch, and Glenn Pense will facilitate a Sunday morning covenant group that worships at 9 a.m. and then meets from 10–11:30 a.m. in Room 100 to practice lectio with the day’s lectionary.
