Lent at First Pres

The liturgical season of Lent is a period of preparation for Easter lasting forty days (excluding Sundays) that begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5. During Lent, First Presbyterian offers a variety of worship, study, and reflective opportunities for the Lenten journey.

Our theme this year is "Lent Traps." Each Wednesday and Sunday during the season of Lent, we will focus on a different "trap" that we can fall into. We will spend time thinking about how we get stuck and may feel like there isn’t a way out. When we are trapped, it prevents us from deepening our relationship with God and others. Through scripture, reflection, and community, we will explore how God meets us in these stuck places and offers us a way forward. By naming the traps that hold us back - whether pride, busyness, perfectionism, or doubt, we open ourselves to grace. Journals will be available starting March 2 outside the worship spaces and around the building. Download a PDF copy of the journal here

ASH WEDNESDAY: MARCH 5

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent with a focus on repentance. Marked with the sign of ashes, we begin with a posture of humility as we focus on God’s love and forgiveness. First Presbyterian offers three opportunities to worship: 12 noon in the Chapel, 5.30 p.m. at Worship on Wednesdays at Community Crossroads (1516 Hemphill St.), and 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary or livestream.

THE LENTEN JOURNEY: MARCH 5

A self-paced opportunity for prayer, the Lenten Journey provides seven meditation stations, each focusing on one of the seven last words of Jesus and an eighth meditation station reflecting on the meaning of resurrection in our own lives. The full experience follows the metaphor of journeying as participants move from one meditation center to the next and may choose to walk our indoor labyrinth. Sacred space, silence, sensory experiences, new forms of personal prayer, and journaling all enhance our ability to receive what Christ offers. Whether you can spare only a few minutes, or can stay for hours, come, walk with Christ in his passion, through his suffering, and into the resurrection. On March 5, the Great Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Facilitators will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. to answer questions and assist you in your experience.

MIDDAY PRAYER SERVICES: WEDNESDAYS, MARCH 12 THROUGH APRIL 9 AT 12 P.M.

These 30-minute services in the Sanctuary offer reflection on the season with prayer, music, and message.

AFTERNOON CONCERTS: WEDNESDAYS, MARCH 12 THROUGH APRIL 9 AT 12 P.M.

Enjoy a 30-minute organ concert by a guest organist immediately ollowing the Noon Lent services. A light lunch will be served after each concert. The concerts and lunch are free with no reservations required. The guest organist schedule is:
