This Sunday in worship Ahreum, Becca, and I have chosen hymns and songs that are uniquely American. From the 19th and 20th centuries, these gospel style hymns and songs are favorites of many as they endure today and speak to a whole new generation of Christians. At 8 and 11 we will sing Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine; Just a Closer Walk with Thee; and Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. In addition, the Summer Choir will sing arrangements of Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling; and Stop By, Lord at 11 a.m. At 9 we will also sing Blessed Assurance and Just a Closer Walk with Thee. In addition, the Jazz Combo will also accompany our singing of His Eye is on the Sparrow and Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
As you read the list of hymns and songs to be sung, did you hear some of the melodies in your head? Did memories of singing one or more of them flood your mind and heart? If so, come Sunday with those memories and add them to the richness of your worship. (Or relish those memories wherever you may be Sunday morning!) If the hymns and songs are new to you, come and be blessed by the voices of sisters and brothers surrounding you as we sing and remember God’s deep and abiding love for all.
